The actor, 50, starred in the box office hit as ringmaster P. T. Barnum and revealed the second installment of the beloved musical is already underway in an interview with BBC Radio 2 on Monday.
The action hero made the confession when speaking to Steve Wright’s Big Guests show about his role in the stop-motion movie Missing Link.
Hugh revealed he ‘knows’ producers are ‘working on a treatment’ for a potential sequel when asked about the possibility of the movie’s return.
He said: ‘The real answer is “could be”, I’m not sure.
I’m being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure.
‘But I think someone is working on a treatment for something… I know they are, they’re working on a treatment for something.’
The Wolverine star then confirmed he ‘would like to be part of’ a potential sequel but he isn’t sure whether his character would be the focus.
He said: ‘I don’t know. I don’t know. I would like to be part of it for sure, and I don’t know if it would be centred on my character.
‘The other thing is, it did take eight years to get it made and that wasn’t all eight years of convincing people. It takes a long time to write stuff.’
It comes after the film’s director Michael Gracey told the Sun in February that he and Hugh are laying the foundations for a follow-up.
He said: ‘When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel.
So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now.’
Hugh starred in the Greatest Showman as P. T. Barnum, acting alongside Zac Efron, who played Phillip Carlyle, and Zendaya, who played Anne Wheeler.
The director also opened up about the eight-year process of making the motion picture, which hit theaters in December 2017.
‘There were huge doubts about it for a very long time,’ he said, ‘And some backers withdrew their money.’
The film totaled more than $434 million at the box office internationally.
